European private collection, early 20th Century (based on custom-made variegated green marble socle)

Based on the disposition of the hair and position of the fillet, the present lot is a fragment of a Roman copy of the Artemis of Gabii type. The eponymous copy is in the Louvre: A. Pasquier and J.-L. Martinez, eds., Praxitèle, exh. cat. Paris, 2007, pp. 312ff., no. 73. The Greek original is dated to the mid-4th Century B.C. and attributed to Praxiteles.
