Yoshitomo Nara fuses Japanese and Western pop culture to create his instantly recognizable style—a combination resulting from the artist’s years spent in Germany as a student. His aesthetic influences include punk rock and folk album covers, Manga and the animations of Walt Disney. Nara’s characters are both adorable and sinister, often rendered on flat backgrounds with bold outlines, exaggerating their cartoonish appeal.

Nara’s Y.N. Lamp design was first featured in the artist’s 2017 solo exhibition, For Better or Worse, at the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art in Japan.
