Description
A silk women's kimono in a soft palette.
- French Impressionists were captivated by the Japanese woodblock prints that began appearing in Paris in the late 1850s, and most had their own private collections. The prints’ scenes from everyday life appealed to the Impressionists, as did the composition, colors and lack of perspective. The religious, allegorical or mythological themes deemed worthy by the art academy teachers at the time were happily absent.
- Japanese artists and designers were, in turn, enamored of the French Impressionist painters and apparently used their work as inspiration for this kimono, which can be seen via this detail of Claude Monet's Poplars at Giverny from 1887.
