Description

A Japanese storage chest from the Edo period.

  • Popular in the Edo period, Hasami-bako, or traveling chests, were used for the storage of textiles, particularly kimonos.
  • Black lacquer with a scrolling foliate design with Mon crests in maki-e.
  • Lined with paper and containing an interior tray.

Exterior with wear to areas of maki-e and overall wear and losses to lacquer commensurate with age and use.

Two decorative corners are missing to the base and the lid is missing two decorative corner straps.

Wear and chips to the wood and lacquer on the interior edges of the base, lid and chest.

Crack to the underside of the tray.

Tears and staining to the paper lining.
