Description

An early 17th century Dutch map of the Holy Land by Jodocus Hondius.

  • Jodocus Hondius (German).
  • Terra Sancta quae in Sacris Terra Promissionis ol: Palestina.
  • Amsterdam: Henricus Hondius, 1630.
  • Original color.
  • This work is presented unframed.

A fine, dark impression of this map of the Holy Land, orientated with north to the left, showing the Mediterranean coast between Beirut and Gaza. The decorations include strapwork cartouches for the title and scale and a vignette of Jonah being thrown overboard to the whale.

Unusually for maps engraved by Jodocus Hondius for his editions of the Mercator atlas, this map is copied from an Ortelius map, Terra Sancta, A Petro Laicstain perlustrata....
