Colours make cars.
This catchphrase has become increasingly relevant in recent years, as buyers of new exotic cars try to make their mark on the industry and make their new car stand out from the rest. This could be having something wild and shouty to attract attention or something subtle and sophisticated, either option seeking to reflect the character of the car. In many cases, manufacturers have risen to the challenge, extending the colour palettes to seemingly limitless options. When configuring a new car to your specifications, why not take advantage of this?
It’s easy to check the box for Rosso Corsa when you’re ordering your new Ferrari, or GT Silver when you’re ordering your new 911, but so much more rewarding when you’ve thought critically about your choice and created something bold and unique.
In 2014, if you were ordering McLaren’s newest and wildest performance car since the F1, a car that utilizes cutting edge technology to push the envelope not only in terms of performance but also in terms of aesthetics, why wouldn’t you order it in the wildest colour available? A 200+ mph supercar is something that demands attention and respect and it will attract attention wherever it goes, no matter the colour. Thus, we believe it should be painted to suit. This was a car so futuristic and revolutionary that it deserved better than the standard offering.
What if you went one step further? What if you stepped back from the available colour palette and went for something completely unique. For the original and current owner of this McLaren P1, MSO Pacific Blue was the perfect fit.
This highly dynamic, iridescent paint scheme sees the car’s colour shift depending on available light and viewing angle, moving from a bright blue, to a darker blue, to a dustry orange, bright purple, and even hints of pink and gold. To the human eye, MSO Pacific Blue is always changing and appears as if it was straight out of science fiction, almost like the P1 itself. To the causal passerby, it is eye catching, exciting and impossible to ignore. To the owner, the colour is constantly reinventing itself, creating a new visual experience every time one lays eye on it.
Ordered new directly from McLaren London in October of 2014, this P1’s first and only owner selected over £73,000 in optional extras, including the MSO Pacific Blue paintwork at a cost of £33,548. A tremendous amount of thought went into the remaining options including the MSO Heritage Badge (done in the style of the nose badge utilized on the McLaren F1 and only available to P1 buyers selecting a significant number of MSO options), purple contrast stitching on the headrest, steering wheel, floor mat stitching and headrests, all done to match the paintwork. Furthermore, Pacific Blue was bought into the car’s interior through body-coloured seat backs and vent bezels. Rather than the standard gloss carbon fiber, satin finish carbon fibre was utilized for all exterior carbon and the instrument cluster bezel as to not distract from the paint. Finally, the P1 logo visible in the engine bay was also painted Pacific Blue.
Since taking delivery, the car has only acrewed 3,000 miles from new, but it has been regularly serviced by McLaren Ascott throughout its life, with annual services carried out by them in 2017, January and December of 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and most recently in March of 2023 at 2,883 miles. This most recent service also included replacing all four tyres. Invoices for this work can be found in the history file alongside correspondence from McLaren prior to delivery, including an invitation to the current owner to the Geneva Motor Show in 2013 to witness the P1’s global debut in person. Alongside its history file, the car is accompanied by its owner’s manuals including the original service book, two keys and the carbon-fibre key delivery box, a car cover and its battery charger. The paintwork presents in fabulous condition throughout, clearly having been well preserved as the owner had Topaz Detailing in London install full-body PPF upon taking delivery.
Undoubtably one of the most exciting P1s to come to market, this car’s specification personifies the P1’s underlying ethos as the most exciting and cutting-edge supercar produced by McLaren since the F1. Is there a better specified P1 in existence? We think not.
Offered from its first and only owner, this is a car that needs nothing but its next bold, enthusiastic custodian.
