Condition

This work is in good overall condition as viewed. There is evidence of wear along the edges of the work, including horizontal line of cracking along the upper edge (likely due to a previous stretcher bar), but this is only visible upon very close inspection. There is some paint shrinkage at areas of thin impasto, and some cracking and craquelure to areas of thick impasto, but these are consistent with the age of the work. There is a very minor loss to the thick black stroke near the right side of the bottom edge. This work could benefit from a light, professional cleaning as there is some minor surface dirt. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals no sign of restoration as viewed. Framed.

Catalogue Note

“Affandi has a unique approach to painting flowers. He always draws them on the spot where they are growing rather than in a vase. The yellow of the sunflowers looks vibrant... Affandi painted his love for yellow and the sunflower as well, which reminds him of the sun, the source of human life.”
