Description

  • 14.8 cm, 5 7/8  in.
well potted with deep rounded sides rising to a slightly flared rim, delicately enamelled on the exterior with four circular gilt-rimmed medallions enclosing sprays of chrysanthemum, daisy and orchid, alternating with elaborate floral strapwork, all reserved on a blue sgraffiato ground picked out with feathery scrolls, the interior painted in cobalt blue with a central roundel of various blooms surrounded by a band of chrysanthemum and daisy sprays, the base with an underglaze-blue six-character seal mark

Marchant & Son, London, 2007, cat. no. 20; another was included in the Min Chiu Society exhibition Splendour of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1992, cat. no. 192; a third, from the Weishaupt collection, is illustrated in Gunhild Avitabile, From The Dragon's Treasure, London, 1987, pl. 36; and a further bowl in the British Museum, London, is illustrated in Soame Jenyns, Later Chinese Porcelain. The Ch'ing Dynasty (1644-1912), London, 1951, no. 1B, pl. CXIII. The Qianlong prototype for this bowl, formerly in the collection of Lord Loch of Drylaw and the collections of Alfred Morrison and Lord Margadale of Islay, Fonthill House, was sold at Christie's London, 9th November 2004, lot 27, and included in Marchant’s 80th-anniversary exhibition Recent Acquisitions, S. Marchant & Son, London, 2005, cat. no. 49 and illustrated on the back cover.
