Description

  • 14.8 cm, 5 7/8  in.
the exterior delicately painted with four roundels enclosing sprays of chrysanthemum, daisy and orchid, reserved on a blue sgraffiato ground incised with feathery scrolls, separated by stylised floral strapwork, the interior painted in underglaze blue with a central medallion containing branches of blooming peony and chrysanthemum, encircled by four further branches of chrysanthemum and daisy, the base with a six-character seal mark

Provenance

An English private collection.

Condition

There is an approx. 5.5 cm hairline crack to the rim at around 7 o'clock position of the mark. The bowl is otherwise in good overall condition with the enamels well preserved.

Catalogue Note

The Qianlong prototypes for this bowl formerly in the collection of Lord Loch of Drylaw, and the collections of Alfred Morrison and Lord Margadale of Islay, Fonthill House, inventory no. 441, were sold at Christie’s London, 9th November 2004, lot 31. Very few Jiaqing examples appear to be recorded, but there is one preserved in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace MuseumPorcelains with Cloisonné Enamel Decoration and Famille Rose Decoration, vol. 39, Hong Kong, 1999, pl. 183.
