Catalogue Note
Originally part of the École de Paris (School of Paris) and the Nouveau Réalisme (New Realism) movements in the 1950s, Kumi Sugai began to shift towards a new original style in the 1960s. Moving away from his previously calligraphic, organic and lyrical imagery, he began creating more hard-edge geometric and typographic forms rendered in bright exuberant palettes. The present work is diminutive in size yet instantly iconic in terms of imagery, wholly representative of Sugai's signature mature aesthetic. Between 1955 and 1970, Sugai participated in the Pittsburgh International (now Carnegie International) five times, and his work featured in the Exposition universelle, Brussels (1958) and Documenta, Kassel, West Germany (1959, 1964). He has been honoured with midcareer retrospectives at the Städtisches Museum, Leverkusen, West Germany (1960), and Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo (1967). His work also was included in Painting and Sculpture of the Decade (1964), Tate Gallery, London as well as in the São Paulo Biennial (1965), where he received the prize for Foreign Artist. In the late 1960s to early 1970s, Sugai produced a commissioned mural for the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and a public mural for the 1972 Olympics.
