Description

  • Bust of Jean Racine (1639-1699)
  • marble bearing the signature BOIZOT and entitled RACINE
  • 82 x 65 cm ; 32 1/3 x 25 1/2 in.
This bust is after a marble model carved by Boizot in 1779 for the Comédie Française, where it is still preserved.

Provenance

Chateau of Pontchartrain, Jouars-Pontchartrain.

Condition

There is minor surface dirt overall, notable in the crevices, and a few small chips in some places to the high points and to the lower edge of the base, consistent with age and handling. A larger loss is visible to the collar of the coat to his proper right back.
