- casket: 35 x 42 x 27,5 cm overall ; 13 3/4 x 16 1/2 x 10 3/4 in.
red velvet slipper with gold embrodery ; in an ebonised and gilt wood casket set with glass panels, the back sealed several times by red wax seals with papal arms
Condition
Fabric in good condition with some wear consistent with age, in particular losses to the metal thread of the slipper. General wear to the casket, including minor non-active worming. An old piece of paper with a handwritten inscription is inside the slipper: "Mule de sa Sainteté le Pape Pie IX donné au compte de Saint Albin à Lyon" [A slipper of His Holiness Pope Pius IX given to the Count of Saint Albin in Lyon]. Louis-Philippe Rousselin de Corbeau de Saint-Albin, Count of Saint-Albin (1822-1879, Lyon), was Empress Eugénie's personal librarian.
