MATTHIAS STOMER | Sarah brings Hagar to Abraham

The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: Matthias Stomer Sarah brings Hagar to Abraham Oil on canvas, in a gilt wood frame The original canvas is lined. This is a recent lining and has insufficient strength to reinforce the five visible fractures, two vertical upper left, and three horizontal; two to the left hand side and one through the centre of the right hand edge. The fractures present with minimal paint loss but are raised. The paint layer is generally well preserved with the paint textured in a good original condition. Some of the more pronounced highlights have been slightly compromised and minor loss to the top edge has been restored out. The left breast of Hagar and the left shoulder of Abraham have minor discoloured restorations. Many of the fine details are intact ; some of the more delicate glazes are faint but the colours retain their original vibrancy and subtle nuances of skin tones remain along with the contrast of light and shadow. Removal of a the residue of a discoloured varnish would improve the tonality of the image .
