Condition
The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: Joachim Wtewael Diana and Acteon Oil on copper. Unframed The copper support is in a very good preserved condition. It is flat and the corners have not been compromised. The paint layer is in exceptional original condition. Under u-v lighting conditions two or three minor pin-prick losses can be detected, these have been touched out on top of an earlier discoloured varnish. The paint texture is, likewise, in very good original condition with the more vulnerable and delicate details, for instance, to wisps of hair, vermillion hair ties to the maid servants and the dogs' muzzles, beautifully preserved. Removal of the discoloured varnish would enhance the overall tonality and reveal the strength and vibrancy of the colours. There is no indication of any previous detrimental conservation intervention.
