Catalogue Note
What Hans Hartung has achieved in more than 40 years of artistic research will perhaps remain unattainable for many. Among the main exponents of the Lyrical Abstraction, Hartung has never ceased to experiment and amaze in every decade of his career. The Sixties, the period in which this work was created, are characterized by dark backgrounds on which gestural shapes and signs float, arising from the use of everyday tools, such as brushes, branches and rakes.
"Scribbling, scratching, acting on the canvas, painting at last, seem to me human activities so immediate, spontaneous and simple as can be a song, a dance or the game of an animal that runs, paws or shakes."
