  • A GOLD PAIR CASED QUARTER REPEATING REPOUSSE VERGE WATCHCIRCA 1750
  • diameter of outer case 47mm, inner 40mm
• Movement: gilded full plate, decoratively pierced balance cock engraved with flowers and foliage with a shell at the neck, flat steel balance, fusee and chain, square baluster pillars, repeating on a bell to the inside case back • bearing the signature Elrhöw, London, silver dust cap engraved London• Dial: gold champlevé, Roman numerals, outer Arabic minute ring, blued steel beetle and poker hands, the centre with banners bearing the signature Elrhöw, London• Cases: gold inner pierced and engraved with scrolling foliage and stylised dolphins, a shell at the neck and mask at the base, maker's mark WI above IDS • gold outer repoussé case with scene depicting Venus and Cupid, the bezels pierced and chased with shell and scrollwork between panels of pierced and engraved foliage, signed beneath the step ML for Martin Langpaur

Condition

Dial: Has retained good definition, with some minor losses to wax infill of numerals. Case: The inner case with some repairs to the pierced decoration, one visible repair to the side above 2 o'clock. The outer case with rubbing to the scene especially to the figures where there is some loss of definition. A few very fine and small splits to the repoussé and some pin holes, some splits also around the thumb piece. Movement: Running at time of cataloguing, repeating is stiff, plunging the pendant activates the train but full pressure has not been applied to see if the watch will strike. Some scratches and wear to the gilding of the plates.

Catalogue Note

Although signed by Elrhöw, London, the signature is almost certainly in reverse indicating that the watch was in fact made by Joseph Wöhrle from Augsburg.
