Description

  • A SILVER ASTRONOMICAL VERGE WATCH WITH INDICATIONS FOR DATE, MONTH, PHASE AND AGE OF THE MOON, SIGNS OF THE ZODIAC AND PERIODS OF THE DAYCIRCA 1690
  • diameter 54.5mm
• Movement: gilded full plate, verge escapement, broad decoratively pierced balance cock and foot with scrolling foliage, plain flat balance with spring, silver regulation disc, fusee and chain, pierced tulip pillars, bearing the signature Quare, London• Dial: gilded with stippled ground, three silver chapter rings for date (lacking hand), time with blued steel hand and moon age indicated via a pointer mounted on a silver disc chased and engraved with stars and with circular aperture to reveal the moon phases, three further apertures for signs of the zodiac with corresponding ruling planet, month with engraved seasonal vignettes and periods of the day with the changing sky• Case: plain silver case, case back with shuttered winding aperture, later pendant with plain ring, maker's mark ST, further indistinct mark

Condition

Dial: Decoration remains clear, tarnishing to the silver, hand for date indication is lacking. Case: Silver case is dirty and tarnished, some light depressions to the surface as expected. Cover closes and catch operation but closure is slightly loose. Movement: Running at time of cataloguing, gilding has dulled and with some scratching and a little rubbing to the finish.
