The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This canvas has an old glue lining, which is still stabilizing the paint layer. The painting is cleaned, varnished and retouched. Under ultraviolet light retouches are visible on the top half of the right edge and around the remaining edges in a few places. There are also retouches in a few spots at the top of the hair, on the left side in the hair, and in a few isolated spots in the upper and left background. There is a line of restoration along the right eye of the sitter, as well as a few retouches in the right side of the forehead and in the tip of the nose. There may be other retouches under an old varnish, but no other retouches are currently visible under ultraviolet light or to the naked eye. The painting looks well and can be hung as is.
