Condition
The canvas is original. There is a stretcher bar mark towards the right edge of the canvas, with some very faint cracks to the paint surface. There is a further stretcher bar mark along the upper edge. There is a slight push to the centre of the canvas, with some associated cracking and loss, and a further, smaller push towards the centre of the upper edge, with further associated paint loss. There are some fine lines of craquelure in the dark pigments in the right hand side of the composition. There are two small vertical scratches at the upper edge. There is some rubbing to the paint surface along the lower edge and in the upper left corner. There are a small number of further tiny flecks of loss in the upper left corner. There is some surface dirt and evidence of studio matter in places. Subject to the above the work appears to be in good overall condition. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals no obvious signs of fluorescence or retouching. The work is held within a linen slip in a gilt wooden frame.
