Catalogue Note
Despite growing up with a street culture that informs the aesthetic of his work, Basquiat was very well-educated and had a great knowledge of art history. References to the ancients are echoed throughout his work, as in Untitled (Venus) where the artist has juxtaposed the symbolically rich name Venus (the Roman goddess for love, beauty, prosperity and victory) with the abbreviation A.D. (anno domini) which refers to the period in time following the birth of Jesus.
