Description

  • Diameter 5 3/8 in., 13.7 cm
of circular outline, finely painted in 'Master of the Rocks' style of bold layering and faint 'blobby dots' for depth and perspective, the domed cover with a scene of five scholar-officials offering tribute to a dignitary standing beneath a canopy held by an attendant with a stately sedan in the foreground, the conforming box with a continuous landscape, the interior of the cover decorated with a seated scholar practicing calligraphy, the lower section with an auspicious scene of the immortal Li Tiegui pouring magical elixir from a double gourd, the base with an apocryphal four-character Chenghua mark (2), coll. no. 1482

Condition

The surface with expected overall wear, minor potting and glaze flaws consistent with age and type. The cover with a shallow chip to the inside rim and another restored flake chip to the exterior rim. The lower section with a small firing tear and tiny nicks to the foot rim.
