Catalogue Note
Having made his famous non-stop solo flight over the North Atlantic in 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh designed a navigational instrument which he had Longines bring to life. Used in conjunction with a sextant and a nautical almanac, the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch - based on the Weems created in 1927 - helped aviators calculate longitude which, when combined with their latitude, gave them their exact geographical location. Longines has always been a true pioneer in making a wide variety of tool watches for pilots and military personnel, and became very famous for their highly accurate and qualitative timepieces. The present Lindbergh watch was sold in 1939 and retailed through the famous Italian retailer A. Cairelli in Rome. A. Cairelli was a retailer of watches, clocks, and mechanical instruments, being the official supplier of the Regia Aeronautica Italiana (Italian Royal Air Force) which is indicated in a red script on the dial just above 6 o'clock.
The watch was a very important instrument for pilots and navigators, enabling them to navigate without any electronic devices to avoid detection or worse, interception.
Undoubtedly as interesting historically as it is technically, and preserved in original condition throughout time, this watch will be offered to the market for the first time.
