Catalogue Note

The Rolex Daytona ref. 16520 was released in 1987 as the first automatic chronograph offered by the brand. In an effort to modernise the legendary chronograph, the Valjoux 72-based manual winding movements were traded for the reliable Zenith El Primero calibre, which Rolex heavily modified to decrease its frequency back to a more relaxed 28'800 bph. The larger 40 mm case was now fitted with a matching metallic bezel and available in either gold or stainless steel. The reference 16520 remained in production until 2000, as Rolex developed the in-house calibre 4130.
Manufactured around 1991, the present yellow gold and rather early example bears the reference 16528 and is fitted with a matching bracelet. The dial bears an inverted 6 at the 6 o'clock register, a detail collectors are particularly keen on. The recently serviced timepiece stands in appealing condition, maintaining the service stickers to its case.
