Description

  • 38.5 cm, 15 1/8  in.
one dish painted to the centre with the scene from the Romance of the Western Chamber to the centre, the second decorated with the story of Sima Xiangru inscribing his ambition on a bridge pillar, the rims painted with six foliate panels enclosing auspicious emblems, the reverse with floral sprigs

Thence in the family by descent.

Condition

This pair of dishes is in overall good condition, with the exception of a few shallow chips to the rims, the largest measuring approx. 0.8 x 0.9 cm to the dish painted with Sima Xiangru. There are also some minor firing imperfections, including pin pricks and iron spots, as well as some very minor surface wear. Both fitted with later metal mounts.
