Catalogue Note

The fashionably attired, elegant woman portrayed in the present lot is Madeleine-Geneviève Dupuis (c. 1675 - p. 1759), the wife of Jean-François Guillieaumon (see Lot 21). She was the sister-in-law of Nicolas Edelinck (who executed the engraving after Vivien's pastel of her husband), the daughter of Marie Mariette (great-aunt of Pierre-Jean Mariette) and half sister of Antoine-Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville.   We are most grateful to Neil Jeffares for identifying the sitter in this portrait and for his help in cataloguing this lot.
