Au sujet des 49 Deutsche Volkslieder. L'édition de chansons folkloriques allemandes occupa Brahms toute sa vie, mais plus particulièrement entre 1893 et 1894. Le septième et dernier volume des 49 Deutsche Volkslieder (juin 1894) comprend les sept arrangements pour soliste et chœur, qui portent la note "Die hier ausgelassenenen Verse lies S[eite].19". Le compositeur souligne ici que tous les versets des sept derniers chants avec chœur ne doivent pas être inclus dans les parties chantées mais imprimés dans une annexe. Il demande que l'impression du volume contenant les deux chansons en dialecte de Cologne soit retardé jusqu'à ce que les maladresses dans le texte et la traduction soient arrangées, souhaitant pouvoir comparer les poèmes figurant dans la collection Karl Simrock aux versions de Zuccalmaglio. Il reconnaît que ces textes sont difficiles à écouter pour une oreille habituée au haut-allemand et qu'il est préférable d'imprimer la version dans le dialecte originale tout en expliquant certains mots. Brahms fait référence aux recueils de chansons populaires publiés par Andreas Kretzschmer et Wilhelm von Zuccalmaglio en 1838-1840, ainsi qu'aux poèmes publiés par Karl Simrock, oncle de Fritz Simrock. En conclusion, le compositeur demande à son éditeur si 49 chansons lui semblent un bon nombre pour une publication. "Es ist durchaus nicht gemeint daß alle Verse in die Chorliedern gesungen werden sollen.  Deshalb steht in die Anmerkung: die übr[igen] Verse “lies” S[eite]... und deshalb meine ich sollen sie nur als Nachtrag auf der letzte Seite der Partitur stehen, in der Stimmen aber gar nicht. Das Heft mit die 2 Kölnischer halten Sie doch zurück, bis der Text in Ordnung ist. Die beiden Gedichte stehen auch in Ihren Onkels Volksliedern, doch abweichend von Zuccalmaglio auch in der Ort[h]ografie". Les deux chants en dialecte de Cologne évoqués dans cette lettre se trouvent dans le cinquième volume : le n° 33 "Och Moder, ich well en Ding han" (version envoyée à Clara Schumann en juin 1858) et le n° 34 "We kumm ich dann de Pooz erenn". Dans l'édition de Simrock, ils ont finalement été publiés avec le texte en haut-allemand imprimée au-dessus de la musique et du texte en dialecte. Brahms's editions of German folksongs occupied him throughout his life, but particularly during 1893-1894.  The seventh and final volume of the 49 Deutsche Volkslieder (June 1894) comprises the seven settings for lead voice and chorus, which bear the note "Die hier ausgelassenen Verse lies S[eite].19".  The two songs in Cologne dialect that Brahms discusses are in the fifth volume: namely no.33 'Och Moder, ich well en Ding han’ (a version of which he had sent Clara Schumann in June 1858) and no.34 'We kumm ich dann de Pooz erenn’.  In Simrock’s edition they were published with the High-German version printed above the music and the dialect text below.
