Catalogue Note

The present icon depicts the 'life-giving spring' in the Balikli Monastery in Istanbul, reputed to have healing properties since the time of Emperor Justinian. The Monastery was destroyed and rebuilt with the conquest of Constantinople in 1453 and again in 1821. Also known as the Monastery of the 'Mother of God at the Spring', it is one of the most important centres of Eastern Orthodoxy and it is often the subject of Orthodox icons.
