Description

  • approximately 330 by 167cm., 10ft. 10in; 5ft. 6in.
  • last quarter 19th century

Condition

The pile is generally fair to good, ranging from areas with knot bars visible, to pile of approximately 2mm. There is an area where the pile is snagged, perhaps by cat claws, on the right had side of the field (please request additional photographs if required). The dark browns are oxidised and the foundation is visible in these areas and there is some associated wear in the lower border. The ends have been blanket stitched, with trimmed warp fringe, side cords rebound, some minor repiling. Overall the carpet is sound but would definitely benefit from a thorough clean before use and the snagged knots trimmed back.

Catalogue Note

The design references 17th & 18th century garden carpets, rendered with charming naivety on a rare white ground: a pastoral idyll with plane trees, cypresses and willows and birds and dogs among the trees and flowers. EMBARGO ON IMPORTATION OF PERSIAN/IRANIAN WORKS OF ART TO THE U.S.A
