Description

  • height 11 1/4 in.; 28.6 cm
each white marble elephant standing four-square with the trunk curled against one leg and the ears resting on the shoulders, a pair of bronze tusks inserted at the jaw, a gilt-metal saddle blanket draped across the back, the saddle supporting a double-lotus-form stand topped with a zun-shaped vase with a domed cover, all set on a waisted gilt-metal rectangular base with canted corners, the gilt-metal throughout with cast and repousse designs and inlaid with dark blue, turquoise, and crimson stones and enamels, the marble with traces of dark blue pigment. 2 pieces.

Condition

One tusk is missing and the other three have been re-stuck. There are chips to all of the elephants' feet, and repairs and fills to the leg of one elephant. The surface and inlay have expected wear and some of the inlay has been broken or lost (with some infilling). Some of the screws securing the elephants to the bases have been replaced.
