Condition

The sheet appears to be sound. Slightly discoloured and some spots of foxing; otherwise in good condition overall. Held under glass in a gilt plaster frame with a cream mount; ready to hang. Unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

This watercolour was made for an engraving by T. Heawood in Picturesque Europe - The British Isles published by Cassell & Co in 1860. A watercolour of the same vista, looking over Edinburgh Prison to the castle, but differing in the foreground details, was sold at Sotheby's at Gleneagles (30 August 1994, lot 790).
