Description

  • 29 cm, 11 3/8  in.
each of cylindrical form with a stepped octagonal base, carved and pierced with scholars with attendants standing conversing on a rocky path in a mountainous river landscape with retreats, plantain, wutong and cranes and other birds in flight, the domed cover with a knop finial

Condition

The incense holders are in very good condition with the exception of some natural flaws running through the stone.

Catalogue Note

Lin Yuanshui was born in 1876 and died in 1937. He was the leading master of the so called Dongmen school of Shoushan stone carving, which emphasised the three dimensional landscape effect. Most modern artists in Fujian have claimed their great skills and techniques passed down by him. His works were presented to the Palace Museum, Beijing.
