oil on canvas, the first depicting an elderly scholar seated comfortably in his studio reading before a window; the second painting of an elegant lady, seated languidly amid luxuriant surrounds, holding a fan and gazing out the window, black and gilt-painted wood-frames (2)

Condition

Both paintings cleaned and relined and with consolidation to the characteristic craquelure along the surface. Both with scattered areas of retouching to losses of paint, the largest to the scholar painting comprising a triangular area from one hand down around the robe and one shoe. Both frames with losses to the lacquer and gilt.

A pair of nearly identical scenes was sold in these rooms, 22nd March 1995, lot 333.
