Catalogue Note

The sitter’s clothes, jewellery and head-dress are very evocative of the fashions in St Petersburg at the end of the eighteenth century. The composition of the present work resembles those of Madame Vigée le Brun, the French painter, who spent six years in Russia between 1795 and 1801.
