Description

Claw-set at the centre with a cushion-shaped sapphire weighing 30.70 carats, within a border of circular-cut diamonds, detachable brooch fitting, together with a later pendant fitting and chain, Austrian assay and partial maker's marks.

Provenance

Given by Princess Isabelle de Croÿ, Archduchess Frédéric of Austria (1856-1931), to her daughter, Archduchess Marie Anne of Austria (1882-1940), on the occasion of her wedding to Prince Elie de Bourbon-Parme (1880-1959) in 1903. "Un écrin en cuir rouge foncé contenant une grande broche, gros saphir entouré de 12 beaux diamants. Cette broche peut être portée comme fermoir du grand collier de perles. Elle m'a été donnée comme cadeau de noces par ma mère l'Archiduchesse Isabelle d'Autriche". 

[A dark red leather case containing a large brooch, a large sapphire framed with 12 nice diamonds. This brooch can be worn as the clasp of the large pearl necklace. This was given to me as a wedding gift by my mother, Archduchess Isabelle of Austria].

Condition

Accompanied by SSEF report no. 93529, stating that the cushion-shaped sapphire weighing 30.70 carats, measuring approximately 19.26 x 17.39 x 10.81mm, is of Ceylon origin, with no indications of heating. Austrian assay mark for 14 carat gold and mounted in silver and 14 carat gold, the chain mounted in 18 carat gold. Sapphire blue of medium strong saturation, some surface-reaching inclusions, abrasions and chips. For more information on the sapphire, please refer to the SSEF report. Diamonds estimated to weigh a total of approximately 11.00 - 12.00 carats, on average I-J colour, SI-I included clarity, as gauged and graded in the mount. Scratches to the metal consistent with age and wear. In good condition. Detachable brooch fitting, together with a later pendant fitting and chain,
