Description

The pencil holder collet-set with a cabochon sapphire, Russian assay mark for gold and maker's mark, fitted case stamped C. Nicholls Ewing, the matchbox holder similarly set, maker's mark, fitted case stamped Franz Syré & Co.

Condition

The pencil holder stamped with Russian St Petersburg assay mark for 14 carat gold and maker's mark AH. The matchbox holder with maker's mark, stamped 585 for 14 carat gold. Sapphires of medium-dark saturation, with typical surface-reaching inclusions, minor scratches and nicks. Scratches and evidence of tarnish consistent with age and wear, particularly on the inside of the matchbox holder. The metal was evidently burnt due to the warmth of the matches. Clasp secure. Total gross weight approximately 47 grams. Fitted cases stamped C. NICHOLLS EWING, 4 PERSPEDTIVE DE NEVEKY, ST PETERBOURG and a fitted case stamped FRANZ SYRE & CO, KOHLMARKT 11, WIEN.
