Description

  • 20cm., 7 7/8in. diameter
beaded circular, each engraved with the Bourbon-Parma coat-of-arms, drapery cartouche and coronet, the detachable domed covers with die-struck anthemion borders, screw-on cone finials above pierced calyxes of stiff foliage and flowerheads, the first dish and cover engraved 'No. 36,' the underside of the second dish stamped 'BIENNAIS' and engraved '45'

Condition

one austrian example marked to underside of base only. Control mark. Numbered 36 to cover, finial and base. The other with French base, marks clear, numbered '45' to base only. Some wear, coats-of-arms a little rubbed, the French base a little springy. Both covers unmarked. Nicely cast finials and calyxs. Covers both fit a little loosely. Good overall.

Catalogue Note

The engraved arms are probably those of Maria-Luisa, Empress of France, Duchess of Parma (1791-1847). A further group from the same service was sold Noblesse Oblige, Sotheby's, London, 14 April 2011, lot 118
