Description

  • Florentine School, circa 1600
  • The Deposition
  • oil on copper
  • 54.3 x 38 cm.; 21 3/8  x 15 in.

Condition

The copper plate is supported by a wooden board, to which it is partly attached with nails. The copper plate is slightly uneven, particularly in the upper right corner where it appears to have been knocked out of shape. The paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is slightly discoloured and uneven. There are no major damages visible to the naked eye. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouchings along the margins and very few scattered in the landscape background, as well as tiny spot retouchings in the figure of Christ, but there is relatively little intervention and the work is in overall good condition.
