The canvas has a firm lining, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is slightly discoloured and uneven. There are some surface damages with associated paint loss and retouchings in the lower half of the composition, one halfway along the lower edge, two below his feet, one in the floor circa 4cm. from the left edge, one in the book circa 9cm. from the right edge, and two to the right of that. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals these as part of a newer campaign of retouchings, as well as an extensive older campaign of retouching, most notable in the upper right and lower left corners, in the sofa, in his jacket and scattered in the background. In overall fair condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in very good condition.
