Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even, aside from a streak across her shoulder. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals fine lines of retouching to reduce the appearance of craquelure throughout the background and a larger area lower left. There are further fine lines in the red pigment of the chair, in the right side of the dog, and a few in the sitter's proper right forearm and her dress lower centre. In overall very good condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in very good condition.

Catalogue Note

The sitter was the daughter of Lord William Beauclerk, second son of Charles, 1st Duke of St. Albans. She married John Drummond, MP for Thetford from 1768-1774, who succeeded his father, Andrew, as head of Drummond's Bank.
