Condition

The panel is made up of a single plank, and is flat and stable. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is slightly discoloured. There is a vertical surface crack starting halfway along the lower edge approx. 2.5cm. long, as well as another vertical crack starting 1cm. from the left edge approx. 7.5cm. long. There is an diagonal scratch circa 9cm. long across the upper part of the sitter's face with associated retouchings, and a small spot of paint loss at the brim of his hat. A further spot of retouching is visible in his proper right elbow crease. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals this, as well as some retouching in between his hands, in the laurel, and tiny flecks in his sleeve and the lower right hand corner, but otherwise it is difficult to discern much underneath the thick, milky varnish. In overall good condition. Offered in a parcel gilt frame with losses.
