Literature
A. Moraht-Fromm, Von einem, der auszog... Das Werk Hans Malers von Ulm, Maler zu Schwaz, Ostfildern 2016, pp. 133–34, cat. no. 3, reproduced in colour p. 133 (as Hans Maler).
Condition
The panel is uncradled, very slightly bowed and stable. The paint surface is quite dirty and the varnish slightly discoloured. Some of the gilding around the figures’ heads appears to be original, but the majority of the background appears to be of a later date. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals two minor campaigns of retouching, the first of which consists of scattered pin prick retouchings through the flesh tones of the figures and the Christ child’s white robe and apple. A handful of later retouchings are visible at the top of the Virgin’s red dress and in her right elbow, and more concentrated areas are in the blue mantle on her left side.

Catalogue Note
Since it was last offered on the market, this panel has been published by Dr. Anna Moraht-Fromm as by Hans Maler. We are grateful to Dr. Bernd Konrad, who previously believed the work to be by Bartholomäus Zeitblom, for now also endorsing the attribution to Hans Maler.
