Condition
Overall the condition of the wood is very good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The base and Christ's foot were added later. There is minor stable splitting to the wood, consistent with the material, in particular a split running vertically from the centre of the back up to the crown of thorns, which has been partially reinforced. The polychromy appears to be, for the most part, refreshed, however there is probably original, textured polychromy to the cloak at the back and at the proper left shoulder. There is some flaking to the polychromy to the top of the head. There is very minor evidence of past worming.

Catalogue Note
The present figure of Christ as the Man of Sorrows has been attributed by Albrecht Miller to the so-called Master of Weilen, who ran a workshop in the Upper Neckar region, probably in Rottweil. The voluminous drapery around the hips finds close parallels in his work, particularly the figure of Saint Nicholas in the Dominikanermuseum, Rottweil (see Bildarchiv Foto Marburg, no. obj20784431).
