Catalogue Note
This rather striking early drawing was probably executed by an artist in the workshop of Andrea del Sarto. It has not so far been possible to find the source of the composition, but it is likely that the drawing is after a lost work by Andrea. In the receipt for Prince William's great 1838 purchase of more than three hundred drawings from the collection of Sir Thomas Lawrence, we read: And del Sarto. The whole Collection as described in Catalogue with a few others. £300. The seventh Woodburn/Lawrence catalogue, to which this entry refers, contained 25 drawings by Andrea del Sarto.
