Catalogue Note
David Cox only undertook three sketching tours out of Britain, one to Belgium and Holland and two to France. The present watercolour was executed either during, or shortly after, Cox's first French visit in 1829. His original plan had been to travel long the banks of the Loire but he turned his ankle, and instead spent six weeks sketching in Paris from a carriage. According to the Fine Art Society label, the present work once belonged to Mary Ann, Lady Quilter. She was married to Sir William Cuthbert Quilter, 1st Bt. (1841-1911), a stockbroker and noted art collector.
