Description
- After Hyacinthe Rigaud
- Portrait of King Louis XIV of France
- oil on panel
- 46 x 36 cm.; 18 1/8 x 14 1/4 in.
Condition
The panel is cradled and flat. The paint surface is quite dirty, the varnish is slightly discoloured and the panel shows evidence of wear. Spots of retouching are visible to the naked eye in the sitter's face, and scattered throughout the background. There are lines of quite pronounced surface cracking along the upper, left and lower margins, with some associate paint lifting, as well as some spots of paint loss, most notably two centre left in the sitter's hair, one lower centre below the sitter's chin, and one in the centre of the upper margin. There is a visible worm hole lower left in his chest. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a very thick varnish underneath which it is difficult to discern much. In overall moderate condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.
