Condition
The large canvas is wax lined, and it presents a strong image beneath an old varnish. Though faintly pressed in some areas, likely due to the wax lining, the details remain strong and read very well. Inspection under UV reveals thin vertical lines of retouching across the upper quadrant, all of which are visible to the naked eye, although these are not too distracting. UV also reveals some small spots and thin lines of restoration scattered here and there in the dogs and the still life, for example in the central dog, (his face, on his shoulder, in his rear, his paw, and on the floor between his two rear paws). There is a spot of retouching also in the meat at lower right, with some more loosely applied strokes in the background. There are also areas of retouching at the extreme edges. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.
