Provenance
Anonymous sale, New York, Christie's, 26 May 2000, lot 35.
Condition
The canvas appears to be lined. The paint layer is stable, and it presents a strong image that reads well beneath a slightly discolored varnish. There are some areas that are slightly pressed, possibly from the relining process, for example in body of dog at left. Inspection under UV reveals some strengthening in the shadows and in the darker details, for example in the darker fur of the dogs, in the paw and ear of one of the dogs, and in the landscape in the foreground. UV also reveals some small spots of retouching in the bird, some of which are visible to the naked eye, including a 3 by .5 inch filled repair at the top of the raised wing, and a thin repair in the center of the same wing. There are also some very thin lines of retouching to address some of the more prominent craquelure. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame.
