Where acquired by the present owner.
Where acquired by the present owner.
Condition
The original canvas has been relined and the paint surface has been a bit pressed as a result. Despite thinness noticeable in the white collar, the overall image still reads very well and presents a striking image. There is a visible area of restoration across the top of the painting, above sitter's head, and down the left hand side. Detail in the armor remains quite nice. Under UV light: scattered retouches are visible to face and collar, and a few in hair. There appears to be some retouching to the right shoulder and a few tiny ones in upper armor. Others are scattered here and there in background. This painting could be hung as is, though some of the old, discolored retouches on face could be improved.
Offered in a painted and part-gilded, carved frame with some minor nicks.

Catalogue Note
Felipe Emmanuele of Savoy was the eldest son of Carlo Emmanuele, Duke of Savoy and the Infanta Doña Catalina Micaela of Austria, daughter of King Philip II of Spain. Felipe Emmanuele died unmarried in 1605, just prior to his 19th birthday. With his death his younger brother Vittorio Amadeo succeeded his father as Duke of Savoy in 1630, having married Princess Christina (1606-1663), daughter of King Henry IV of France, on 10th February 1619. There is a three-quarter length portrait of Felipe Emmanuele in the Museo de Bellas Artes, Bilbao.1 1. See M. Kusche, Juan Pantoja de la Cruz y sus seguidores, Madrid 2007, p. 162, reproduced fig. 118).
