Condition

The canvas is laid down on board and as a result appears pressed. The painting presents a striking figure and the image reads well. There is some minor scuffing along the right edge that is not too distracting. Spots of retouches are visible to the naked eye like at right and at left of the white pants the sitter wears, and on the forehead of the sitter. Inspection under UV shows inpainting to the craquelure throughout, such as at center right on the sitter's blue robe. There appears to be spots of retouches scattered on the bottom left quadrant, background sky and column at left. More finely applied, smaller lines of retouches are on the red rope the sitter wears around his waist and on the sitter's lower sleeve. The painting is offered in a carved gilded wood frame.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Christopher Bryant for identifying the uniform worn by this young man as that of an officer of the Royal Artillery.  This pattern of coat was worn in the Royal Artillery from circa 1797 until 1812, when it was changed to a short-tailed jacket with gold embroidered buttonholes.
