Condition

An old glue relining is firm and stable. The paint surface has been pressed overall in the relining process, however the detail in the figures remains well intact and the composition still reads very well. As is typical with Neapolitan paintings of this period, the dark tones in the background areas have sunken a bit and lost some of their definition. Examination under UV light reveals retouching throughout the composition. There are very small retouches to Christ's body and face with a larger area on his right forehead; Small retouches on Virgin's face and hands with a larger vertical area (about 5 in. long) on the left side of her face from forehead down to lower cheek; retouching can be seen all along the top edge, possibly along an added strip (?). Retouches of varying sizes can also be seen at upper right and left quadrants, along the tree trunk at left side, and scattered in other areas of the background. This painting still presents a strong image and could be hung in its present state. In a black wood frame with painted design along the center of each side.
